Background

Got this battery analyzer for BA-5590 family batteries and/or 18650 Li-Ion cells and/or packs, like used in the BB-2590 family of batteries.

Description

This is a more sophisticated battery test instrument than the military type battery chargers.  It's made mainly for maintaining commercial portable batteries but there is an adapter for the BA-5590 style battery.
This is a 2-bay instrument and the C7400 is a 4-bay version.  Has charge alogrithims for SLA, Li-Ion, Ni-Cad and Ni-MH.  Does not have SMBus capability.
For testing one BA-5590 family battery 2-bays are required so the C7200 can only test one BA-5590 family battery at a time.
The latest (March 13, 2007) firmware is 6.12.  [Note the C7200 & C7400 C-Series testers that also do Li-FePO4 batteries]

Internal Programs

Basic

Auto - exercises - recondition if needed
Charge - fast charge w/o capacity
Prime - charge-discharge until max capacity
Quick Test - State of Health for known battery types (requires Learn)

Advanced

Self-Discharge - 24 hour test
Life-Cycle (destructive)
Dishcarge Only - % of capacity
Extended Prime - start with 16 hour trickle charge
Ohm Test - 15 seconds DC based
Run Time - based on cycle of standby, Rx and Tx currents (needs to be programed)
Boost - for use with protection circuits or open or shorted batteries to rejuivinate them
Learn - takes from 4 to 8 hours, builds info needed for Quick Test, involves multiple charge/discharge cycles
Quick Learn - involves a single charge discharge cycle
Custom 1, 2, 3 & 4 - up to 5 cycles with IF test branching

Battery Adapters

Cadex makes a plethora of adapters that are specific to some commercial portable battery.  In addition they make some universal probe type adapters and a cable adapter p/n 07-110-0115 that has wires for positive and negative as well as a temperature sensor.

Cadex makes many battery adapters for their battery analyzers.  I expect that the difference between the following battery adapter relates to the extra top contacts.

Ericsson Prism Adapter 7-4282

Got this as a donor unit to make my own adapter.  Chosen by low price on eBay.

PCB appears identical to M3538A Fig 1 above, but not marked the same way.
Fig 3 Rough prototype for single cell adapter
This is using the existing parts of the Prism adapter.
Maybe better would be to make a bracket so the battery holder
would stand vertically.  When using this battery holder a slight
bump will cause the battery to fall away from the contacts.

Fig 4 rough prototype for single cell adapter.
Standing with wires up.  This has two advantages over wires down:
1. the teeth that hold the spring loaded contact will grip and
2. the wires and fixed terminal do not need a big hole in the adapter.
Two of these fixtures could be installed side by side.
