While installing a Panasonic KX-TA824 small business phone system in my house it was necessary to open up all the phone jacks to determine how they were wired and to modify the wiring.
The older wall phones mounted to a bracket that has a sliding jack and a couple of locating lugs. This allows removing the phone by sliding it up. To get access to the electrical connections the trim plate can be removed by prying it off starting at the bottom, see photos.
It uses a 4228 network and has the 840364202 Polarity Guard. When Touch Tone phones first came out they would not work if just plugged into the house wiring because they were deliberately made polarity sensitive. You needed to pay an extra fee each month to have Touch Tone service. By installing a polarity guard the phone will word with either line polarity.
There was no wire on the 4228 network terminal K and there was a red with with it's spade lug covered with clear tape not connected to anything. Connecting the red wire to the K network terminal restored the ring.
