The radio's are Israeli marked and do not have xtals in them, but they do have the antennas, we're investigating now a couple sources for original xtals. Batteries are new fresh units ordered from the original government contractor and are being sold at cost for $22.50ea. Domestic members can order directly from the dealer at 1-800-553-2262, ask for Ted. He will not however ship to over seas buyers, so I have taken the liberty to order 10 radios for our foreign members. So contact me if you want one, I didn't order any batteries. Subject: Breakthrough in power management and energy conservation Date: 4/2/98 1:26 PM US Army News Source 01 Apr 98 The US Army announced a breakthrough in Soldier System power today. Powering portable electronic devices has long been an issue with the army since the early days of the "walkie talkie." In the last few years the power issue has been exacerbated with the plethora of electronics added to the soldier in the quest for digitization. In the recent Force XXI trials at Fort Irwin, California (March 97), the Dismounted Soldier System (DSS) trialed required 43 pounds of batteries for each days operation. To combat the excessive weight and logistics issues this raises, the US Army Research Labs has invested heavily in advanced battery as well as light weight fuel cell technologies. The fuel cell research has yielded highly efficient small proton exchange membrane devices within the weight requirements for soldier power. The drawback has been the danger of carrying the highly flammable fuel on the soldier (typically hydrogen or methanol). With this fuel strapped to the soldier, a normally non-lethal shot hitting the individual's equipment could now cause a deadly explosion and fire. The breakthrough came when it was discovered that methane could also be used to power the fuel cells. Now, combined with a complementary Natick Lab program developing and improving high-flatulence rations, soldiers will be able to fuel their own electrical power source. A hybrid "proof of concept" device was quickly assembled combining the methane fuel cell with a lithium-ion rechargeable battery. Key to the success of this device was the development of a novel methane reclamation harness capable of capturing up to 90% of the gases produced in the digestive tract. Now the soldier has virtually an uninterrupted power supply for all the electronic devices necessary for a state-of-the-art Infantryman. The early trials of the devices have been very successful and encouraging. Work remains on the issue of the comfort of the methane reclamation harness as well as initial reluctance on the soldier's part to wear it. However, an unanticipated benefit of the device has been an improved work environment as soldiers are typically crammed together in confined spaces with restricted ventilation. The soldiers have even been known to affectionately call it their "BOHICA" harness. Future plans include measuring soldier's methane production during basic training and assigning them a kilowatt rating. This rating can then be used to assign a soldier to an appropriate Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). Having received wind of this development, the National Organization for Women (NOW) have begun to raise a stink on this issue. One representative stated: It is just one more example of an entrenched male dominated institution attempting to restrict career opportunities for women. Everyone knows that women produce on average 30% less methane than men. It is a typical male thing to now put a premium on passing gas and using it as a weapon to hold women back. The scientist do, however, see a great future for the device in civil applications. Potential applications range from powering boom boxes (portable radios), remote scientific expeditions, portable computers, and electrification in undeveloped countries. In the latter case, a larger version is being developed to fit cattle and potentially other large animals. The scientists predict that cattle could provide significant input to a national power grid if properly wired. ...the Answer was Blowing in the Wind. ed) Should this have been included in the HUMOR section? *********************************************** MEMBERS WRITE; Regard search receivers, I have an APR-14 (not APR-4), and it is indeed stagger-tuned to give a 6 MC BW in the front end. At a special ceremony, two of the most expensively saved animals were released back into the wild amid cheers and applause from onlookers. A minute later they were both eaten by a killer whale. A woman came home to find her husband in the kitchen, shaking frantically with what looked like a wire running from his waist towards the electric kettle. Intending to jolt him away from the deadly current she whacked him with a handy plank of wood by the back door, breaking his arm in two places. A shame as he had merely been listening to his walkman. Two animal rights protesters were protesting at the cruelty of sending pigs to a slaughterhouse in Bonn. Suddenly the pigs, all two thousand of them, escaped through a broken fence and stampeded, trampling the two hapless protesters to death. A psychology student rented out her spare room to a carpenter in order to nag him constantly and study his reactions. After weeks of needling, he snapped and beat her repeatedly with an axe leaving her mentally retarded. In 1992, Frank Perkins of Los Angeles made an attempt on the world flagpole-sitting record.By the time he had come down, eight hours short of the 400 day record, his sponsor had gone bust, his girlfriend had left him and his phone and electricity had been cut off. And the last & best....... Iraqi terrorist, Khay Rahnajet, didn't pay enough postage on a letter bomb. It came back with "return to sender" stamped on it. You guessed it, he opened it and said a fond farewell to his face. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "How's your new job at the factory?" one guy asked another. It's kind of a chuckle and it's kind of amusing to oblige him in his current quest.... Spread this around!!! So, without Further Ado....Dale has a story for all of you: A great example of consumer terrorism My daughter and I had just finished a salad at Neiman-Marcus Cafe in Dallas and decided to have a small dessert. Because both of us are such cookie lovers, we decided to try the Neiman-Marcus Cookie. It was so good that I asked if they would give me the recipe and the waitress said with a small frown, "I'm afraid not."... Well, I asked, would you let me buy the recipe? With a cute smile, she said, Yes. I asked how much, and she responded, "Only two fifty, it's a great deal." I said with approval,..." just add it to my tab." Thirty days later, I received my VISA statement from Neiman-Marcus and it was $285.00. I looked again and I remembered I had only spent $9.95 for two salads and about $20 for a scarf. As I glanced at the bottom of the statement, it said, Cookie Recipe $250.00 That's outrageous! I called Neiman's Accounting Dept. and told them the waitress said it was two-fifty,which clearly does not mean two hundred and fifty dollars by any POSSIBLE interpretation of the phrase. Neiman-Marcus refused to budge. They would not refund my money, because according to them, What the waitress told you is not our problem. You have already seen the recipe - we absolutely will not refund your money at this point. I explained to her the criminal statues which govern fraud in Texas, I threatened to refer them to the Better Business Bureau and the State's Attorney General for engaging in fraud. I was basically told, Do what you want, we don't care, and we're not refunding your money. I waited, thinking of how I could get even, or even try and get any of my money back. I just said,Okay, you folks got my $250, and now I'm going to have $250 worth of fun. I told her that I was going to see to it that every cookie lover in the United States with an e-mail account has a $250 cookie recipe from Neiman-Marcus...for free. She replied, "I wish you wouldn't do this." I said, Well, you should have thought of that before you ripped me off, and slammed down the phone on her. So here it is...Please, please, please pass it on to everyone you can possibly think of. I paid 250 for this...I don't want Neiman-Marcus to get another penny off of this recipe....(Recipe may be halved) 2 cups butter 4 cups flour 2 tsp. soda 2 cups sugar 5 cups blended oatmeal 24 oz. chocolate chips 2 cups brown sugar 1 tsp. salt 1 8 oz. Hershey Bar (grated) 4 eggs 2 tsp. baking powder 2 tsp. vanilla 3 cups chopped nuts (your choice) Measure oatmeal and blend in a blender to a fine powder. Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda. Add chocolate chips, Hershey Bar and nuts. Roll into balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Makes 112 cookies. Have fun This is not a joke --- this is a true story.
