Subject: [armyradios] Digest Number 662 Date: 2 Jun 2001 06:10:55 -0000 From: Logan.T.Mitchell@usdoj.gov Subject: Re:AN/PRR-9,PRT-4 Hi Art and anyone else who may have the same questions, I have the PRT-4/PRR-9. I used a plastic case from Radio Shack along with one 9 volt battery and three to four 1.5 volt AA batteries for a total voltage of 13.5 to 15 volts dc for the PRT-4 while the PRR-9 takes 4.5 volts by using three 1.5 volt AA batteries in a similar plastic case. For the PRR-9 you have to take a 4-cell AA battery holder and connect a jumper between one empty space of the battery holder to get the 4.5 volts. I tried 6 volts but the unit doesn't work as well. I'll have to get you the Radio Shack stock number on the battery case for the PRT-4. It fits right into the battery holder cage of the PRT-4. You'll have to cut out a square hole for the pins of the PRT-4's power supply pins to fit through the plastic battery holder case. It took some thought on how to do this but it worked. The 4-cell battery holder stock number is 270-383 ($1.39). Get some 9 volt battery clips too from them, standard duty stock #270-325 (5pack for $1.39) or heavy duty stock #270-324 (5 pack for $1.89). For both units, use some polarized interlocking connectors, Radio Shack stock #274-234 ($1.19). Their female MOLEX pins will fit right over the male pins of the PRR-9/PRT-4. Just get some heat shrink tubing, one black one red, to fit over the MOLEX pins for polarity color-coding. The battery holder for the PRR-9 is a different story. I just used a heavier grade plastic case similar to what I used for the PRT-4 with longer power supply wires. I found out that the newer M-16 rifle ammo pouches with the smaller-at-the-bottom side straps allows the battery case to partially drop in quite nicely and the PRR-9 fits inside the pouch quite nicely as well. I just turned the unit upside down, adjusted the antenna so that it flexes slightly at the bottom. This way the on/off/volume control and the earpiece jack are face up. The ammo pouch can clip on to one of military pistol belts. I have the operations and maintenance manuals also.
