Hopefully this paper tape punch will allow making various paper tapes. It's related to a number of other paper tape equipment I have, see the Related paragraph below.
The front panel is engraved:
Tape-ARD® Key Punch Model 173A
California Technical Industries
Belmont, California
As received it did not work. The solution was to grease the Zerk fitting shown in Fig 2 below.
I've tried to put oil in the oil holes in the main shaft, but so far do not have a way to grease it's Zerk fitting (Wiki).
After each perforation all the keys pop up.
1. Press none, or 1 to 8 keys for the character to be punched
2. Choose Manual (not automatic)
3. Press Perforate
Pressing CLEAR doesn't seem to do anything since the setting keys pop up after each perforation when in manual mode.
It's not clear how the Continuous Perforate key works.
It would be nice to know what needs to be lubed on this machine. If you know let me know.
The tape is not paper, but rather a sandwich that can not be torn by hand. The center layer would block IR light to allow use with high speed optical readers
