Background

This is a GPS Disciplined Oscillator (GPSDO) consisting of two units, one that contains the GPS receiver and a redundant slave oscillator that's also disciplined by the single GPS receiver.  So the GPS receiver and it's antenna are not redundant, but the rest of the timing solution is making this a much more robust system than a single GSPDO.

RFTG is Lucent speak for Radio Frequency Timing Generator.

Description

Got these from eBay seller aecisouth.  They were made by HP/Symetricon for Lucent as the timing source for a cell site.

The Z3810AS is the System designation by HP.  The Z3811 is the GPS DO and the Z3812 is the DO.  Interface cable is the Z3809A.

The front panels of each unit are the same size 11-1/4" wide x 3" high.  The two units when side by side are too wide to fit into a 19" equipment rack.
The interface cable requires the two units to be stacked vertically.  In this case both units would fin on a 4U (7.5") high x 19" wide rack panel.
The _____ four captive mounting screws are 2.25" c-c vertically and maybe 10.5" horizontal c-c.
From the top screw on one box to the bottom screw on the other box is about 0.78"

Major Components

Z3810 system Connection order starting with the GPS antenna which feeds the REF 1 GPSDO (Z3811) which feeds the (Z3809A) Cable which feeds the REF 0 DO (Z3812).

DC Power

To power both REF 0 and REF 1 requires a power supply between 18 and 36 Volts. I expect that the current draw goes down as the voltage goes up.
Possible battery packs would be:
5 each 6   Volt AGM batteries: 30 VDC nominal, 34.5 V float charge  (This option would provide more voltage and for equal Amp Hr cells, more power)
2 each 12 Volt AGM batteries: 24 VDC nominal, 27.6 V float charge  (Based on the front panel label this is probably the one intended)

Here's the current for both the REF 0 and REF 1 wired in parallel to a power supply.

Cable p/n Z3809A for Z3810AS

Hardware molded connector marking: hp

DB-15m to DB-15m.
Note: the J5 Interface connector is the only one on both front panels that has the mating DB-15f connector so there's no way to install it in the wrong place.
The cable is symmetrical end to end so it doesn't matter which end goes to which box.

Note 1:  It may be that opening REF0-7 will allow both REF0 and REF1 to display the green status LEDs.

Pins 3, 8 & 13 on each end of the cable are shorter than the other pins. This is typically done to support hot swapping.   In this case ground is connected after the signal connections.  That way it doesn't matter which ground connects.
